My friend - who shall remain nameless; yes he is real. No - I'm not speaking of 'Frank' in my head. . . no - I am not speaking of 'Willie' of my other. . . nevermind.
Anywho - upon discussing my newest post. It was recommended that I add to it some commentary, other than the lyrics themselves.
I was about to do so - giving some insight on why Nirvana is my favorite band, and why I chose this particular song to post.
As I clicked the edit button - and was about to add my words to theirs, I stopped. Now - they are my favorite band. That doesn't mean that I think that they are the greatest band in the world, or provide such meaning and depth to music: i.e. Coldplay fans (who are a bunch of talentless twats who kyfe songs from others bands and I loathe every song of theirs). However - I found that with this particular song - I didn't need to add my own commentary.
Serve the Servants is a solid song. I just think so - if you disagree that's your purview, you may go back to enjoying your Yanni.
From the opening stanza - any youth who faces reality and the time to grow up has looked themselves in the mirror and thought something along this line.
Any song that can incorporate Monty Python into it has to be a solid song.
What does it mean to you to try hard to have a father, but instead having a dad? Is it a spiritual metaphor - is it concrete - is it someone lost seeking someone to offer guidance and comfort?
What does it mean to Serve the Servants? Discuss. . .
I think this song contains Cobains most autobiographical lyrics. "Teenage angst has paid off well/ Now I'm bored and old" is a direct reference to the mania and fame surrounding "Nevermind" and Kurt's instant celebrity status. "self-appointed judges judge" is a poke at his critics. I think "if she floats then she is not a witch" has reference to media treatment of Courtney. Above all else, this is a song about his father, Don. "I tried to have a father/ But instead I had a dad" and "That legendary divorce is such a bore". In his own words, Kurt said: "I guess this song is for my father, who is incapable of communicating at the level of affection in which I have always expected." Of course, Kurt liked to exagerate things for dramatic effect. His parents divorce tore him up and I think Kurt always felt inadequate as a son because his dad was a jock and Kurt wasn't.
Oh, and "Dive" is a far better song in my opinion. One of his best.
